Upper School Instructor of Science – Biology and Chemistry
Description and Responsibilities
The Instructor of Science is responsible for the instruction of foundational skills, understanding, and theory in Biology and/or Chemistry classes across multiple grade levels. The ideal candidate will be passionate about teaching science within a Classical Orthodox framework, integrating faith and reason, and cultivating wonder, intellectual rigor, and virtue in students.
The Instructor will:
- Contribute to the intellectual and spiritual life of the school community.
- Be committed to mentoring students in both academic and personal growth.
- Work with the other faculty of science in establishing and maintaining an appropriate scope and sequence of skill acquisition and improving pedagogical practices to enhance student outcomes in the Saint Constantine program.
- Teach students proper methods of approaching scientific disciplines and ideas appropriate to the subject/grade level in a manner that:
- Is relatable and engaging
- Emphasizes logical and critical thinking in pursuit of deep understanding and the ability to apply scientific and mathematical principles to analyze and solve meaningful problems
- Model and encourage an understanding of their subjects and enthusiasm for the pursuit of these disciplines.
- Establish and maintain a syllabus for each class that clearly outlines for students and parents the goals, learning outcomes, expectations, and work schedule for the course.
- Maintain grade books for all students, updating grades and comments (when applicable) every two weeks or more.
- Keep office hours at least twice per week at times most students are available.
- Be responsive to electronic communications with families and students and willing to offer insight for improvement by electronic communication, phone, or in person.
- Attend department meetings as requested by the Upper School Dean or Department Lead to foster communication and community among math and science teachers across grade levels and improve Saint Constantine STEM pedagogy and outcomes.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required.
- Teaching experience in upper school science strongly preferred.
- Excellent rapport with upper school students.
- Experience in classical education preferred.
- Strong understanding of the ethos and values of The Saint Constantine School philosophy of education.
- Master’s degree or higher in relevant field preferred.
Reports To: Upper School Dean
Salary Classification: Full-time, exempt, twelve months
Supervision of Others: No
